The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Joe Biden, recently chose his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris of California. The announcement provides an opportunity to discuss the impact of a vice-president on the field of health care.

How does a vice president impact health care in the United States?

The full impact of a vice president on health care within the country depends on a variety of factors. Some have a strong stance on the subject, others may be more flexible. During the democratic presidential nominee campaigns, each nominee presented their views on health care. As such, each nominee provided some information about their stance on health care. Some pushed for increased government involvement, others prefer individuals take the lead through use of the private sector.

Current Vice President Mike Pence has taken an active role, reaching out to hospital administrators to help provide clarity on the administration’s view on the practice of health care. In one example, Vice President Pence reached out to request these administrators collaborate and provide data on COVID-19 testing to help the administration better understand disease patterns and provide information to help guide policy discussions.

Has Sen. Harris announced her plans regarding health care in the U.S.?

During her own presidential campaign, Sen. Harris supported an increased role of government-administered insurance plans and an expansion of the current Medicare system. Although she provided detail during this previous campaign, her views may change now that she is running with Mr. Biden. It is likely health care will play an important role in their campaign and more information on their platform regarding health care will be released in coming months.
