It is invariably disturbing and even frightening to receive a subpoena or to be indicted as part of a civil or criminal investigation. A Manhattan pharmacy owner and a pharmacist at the Tribeca locale were recently indicted on grand larceny charges, according to a news report.
Prosecutors allege that the owner and pharmacist defrauded Medicaid of approximately $3 million.
Hin Wong owns three Downtown Manhattan pharmacies. She and a pharmacist were both charged in the indictment, state attorney general Eric Schneiderman announced recently. The prosecutor noted that the owner had been arrested back in August, but he claims that follow-up investigation revealed additional evidence of fraud.
Officials said that the owner and supervising pharmacist of NYC Pharmacy defrauded the state and federal Medicaid and Medicare programs of at least $3 million. Wong and Mery Gooden billed the programs for prescriptions that were not dispensed, authorities claim.
The prosecutor’s office says that the two paid kickbacks to undercover investigators for bringing prescriptions to the pharmacy. The pair then allegedly billed Medicaid and Medicare for refills of the prescriptions — refills that were never dispensed.
“The blatant theft and abuse of Medicaid is reprehensible and will not be tolerated by my office,” Schneiderman said in a statement.
